Why We Flip the Base Artwork on Custom Shot Skis and Snowboards

Why We Flip the Base Artwork on Custom Shot Skis and Snowboards

If you’re reviewing the artwork for a custom shot ski or snowboard, you might notice something unexpected: with both sides laid out in the same direction, the base design looks upside down.

That’s intentional. At American Gear Company, we orient the top and base artwork with horizontal displays and photos in mind, helping your design read naturally when either side faces the viewer.

Why Does the Base Artwork Look Upside Down?

A flat artwork layout shows both surfaces at once. Your finished product has those surfaces on opposite sides.

We rotate the base artwork 180 degrees relative to the top for the intended horizontal presentation. In the layout, that makes the base look upside down. When the finished product is turned over into its display position, the design reads upright.

This is a rotation—not a mirror effect. Your lettering and logo still read normally.

See How the Artwork Orientation Works

The animation below illustrates the top and base coming together, then the product turning over to reveal the readable base design.

The folding motion illustrates how the two printed faces relate; it does not represent the manufacturing process.

Designed for Displays, Photos, and Brand Promotions

Custom shot skis and snowboards often become more than equipment. They’re held up for group photos, displayed on walls, featured at events, and shared on social media.

Thoughtful artwork orientation helps keep names, logos, and messages easy to read in those horizontal presentations. For a promotional shot ski or branded snowboard, that means people can recognize your design when a photo is shared.

Orientation still matters when positioning the product: no fixed design will be upright from every angle. Our layout is planned around the intended display position.

A Small Detail That Makes Your Design Work Better

An upside-down base in your artwork layout isn’t a printing mistake. It’s a deliberate design choice that considers how your finished product will be held, displayed, and photographed.

Whether you’re creating a personalized shot ski or a custom snowboard, we think about both sides—and how each one will show off your design.
